Default Red tint when playing videos

whenever I play an .avi or .wmv file I get a red tint, in the video. I
get this even when using something like mplayer which bypasses
directshow filters.

As far as I can tell, I don't experience this with .mpeg or .mov files.

I checked my overlay settings and my color settings seem to be right.

anyone know what causes this?
