Default Direct3D Device not found with Driver 91.31

I purchased an XFX GeForce 6600 GT card that works on my AGP port and
have had it for the past year. Have had no problems with it until I
recently updated my driver to 91.31. Now whenever I run ANY game that
uses DriectX and the Direct3D part of it the games produce the same
error and claim they can't find a Direct3D Device and exit before the
game even starts.

I'm running Windows XP with the latest DirectX runtime and Service
Packs installed. I tried running the dxdiag program from the run
command and the DirectDraw tests pass, the Direct3D tests all fail
claiming it can't create a Direct3D Device, and the AGP Texture
Accleration option is grayed out and claims its not supported when it's
always been before?

I tried uninstalling the driver, and rolling back to 84.21. With that
driver installed a Direct3D Device can be created, I can run my games,
the AGP Texture Acceleration is supported and enabled...but strange
things happen in the games. Black triangles shoot out from the main
character I control, polygons disappear and re-appear, sometimes they
turn different colors...just weird results.

My computer temperature and graphics card temperature stay in the safe
range all the time, the fan on the graphics card still works. I took
the graphics card out and put my old ATI Radeon 9700 Pro in and that
works fine...no problems...so it's not a problem with the motherboard,
AGP slot, or corrupted DirectX files on my system. Whats going
on...I've read some similar problems on here too... I can't believe a
driver could kill your graphics card that easily! Whats wrong?

Jeffrey, sorry I can't help except to say that I'm experiencing
something very similar though only when using Windows XP Embedded.
Nvidia driver version 84.21 works ok for me except that certain polys
dont get drawn. I confirm the same results with dxdiag using any of
the 91.xx drivers, similarily my app gets no D3D device with these. My

I've reported the problem in the nvnews.net Forceware forum, so far no
'bites'. Pls post if you find a solution, will do the same.

Default Direct3D Device not found with Driver 91.31

Update - I found that on my system, upgrading from DirectX 8.1 to
DirectX 9.0c solved my problem with all the 9x.xx nVid drivers. I used
the runtime binary download on the Microsoft site he

Good luck, and pls confirm if this fixes things for you.

Also to specify, use a driver killer program to get rid of old driver files
still in the system, because they can try to run the same as the files the
OS is using to render games. Email the card manufacturer to see if they have
a fix, that works sometimes.
