Default 1280 x 1024 resolution setting

My computer is using NVIDIA FX5500 GeForce graphic card and Philips 23PF9946
LCD panel. They are connected using DVI interface and using the driver from
ForceWare v81.98 in which does not support 1280 x 1024 and does not work at
1280 x 768. The panel has maximum resolution 1280 x 1024 while the graphic
card has 1280 x 960 maximum. Thus I can adjust the graphic card resolution
to 1024 x 768. How can I improve the resolution without changing the
graphic card? Where can I find the supported resolutions of a graphic card
before I purchased and installed it.

Thanks,

Scott
