Any expert wireless networking experts available using A7N8X Deluxe ?
Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo:
I`ve been struggling to setup a wireless 802.11a peer-peer network between my main computer with internet dial-up access using Windows XP Pro & my Windows 98 Laptop for over 2 weeks ! I suspect I`m possibly missing some hardware - this is my setup: Intel 5000 Access Point connected (crossover cable) directly to the network slot of my motherboard (AsusA7N8X Deluxe) Intel CardBus card plugged into my laptop I simply want to be able to setup a network (Ad-hoc) and share the files on both computers & dial-up internet connection on main computer. I`ve been through the Network setup/internet sharing etc at least 10 times but still can`t get them to work. Mobo LAN connection is set to 192.168.0.1.,Access Point isset to 198.168.0.2., Laptop adapter uses 192.168.0.3. subnet for each is 255.255.255.0. SSID is HOME on all machines & I use WEP (128 bit encription) - firewall is disabled. Whilst I can see an adapter on the Laptop, no adapter is showing on the main computer (presumably the Access Point isnot `seen` as anything by Windows XP) My laptop `says` I`m connected to HOME and speeds look very good at 24 bps ? ANY Ping commands I make from either machine time out so obviously the connection is not working. PROBLEM: Is it correct (okay) to simply connect the Access Point directly to my main computer via the lan connector ? I`m NOT using a hub, switch or router OR should my Access Point be plugged into a Switch/Hub (presumably this would then show up as a Network Adapter on my main computer) Can anyone give me any guidance or pointers on what I`m likely to have wrong ? -- Andy M Moore |

First of all ...
You have an AP n you use Adhoc mode ? AP is for infrastructure mode .. NOT adhoc. AP to main computer via Ethernet port ? that's fine .. no problem. as AP is "acting" like a wireless hub there. =bob= "Andy M Moore" wrote in message ... First of all ...
You have an AP n you use Adhoc mode ? AP is for infrastructure mode .. NOT adhoc. I wasn`t aware of this, I have two other computers in household - don`t suppose they will ever be accessing the main computer at same time so this iswhy I tried to setup ad-hoc. I suppose infrastructure should be used. AP to main computer via Ethernet port ? that's fine .. no problem. as AP is "acting" like a wireless hub there. Oh........ I`ll try my setup in infrastructure mode. PS. As I am connecting my AP directly to ethernet point, I have to use a crossover cable per my manual Thanks so far -- Andy M Moore |
