Windows Update and Patch Tuesday
Since yesterday was Patch Tuesday, I fired up Firefox with the Windows
Update plug-in and got the 5 updates. Way cool! Unlike IE, Firefox allowed me to browse in multiple windows while the update ran. If you like using Firefox 99.999% of the time, here is where to get the plug-in: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/195 .... Ben Myers |

The response you got implies that the plugin is not installed. You have to restart Firefox after installing many plugins, just to be sure. And I'll be damned if I'll turn on Automatic Updating to poll for updates on every reboot (making the reboot time longer) for a once a month update. I can remember only one Windows update in the past 3 years or so that was provided on a day other than Patch Tuesday. Same thing with "Dell Updates", "HP Updates", "Lenovo Updates", "Acrobat Updates", "Java Updates". When was the last time HP provided ANYONE with a useful update? All these stupid automatic updates simply make it take longer and longer to boot a system... Ben Myers |

Windows Update and Patch Tuesday
Hi!
Works perfectly for me with Firefox 3.5.2. *Don't know why it did not work for you. *The response you got implies that the plugin is not installed. *You have to restart Firefox after installing many plugins, just to be sure. Indeed, it seemed to work OK here on a testing basis. I don't think that I'll leave it in place, though. It's not like I can't use the strategically placed Windows Update icon on the Start Menu to get there during the few times I want to. (The icon, if you use it, is smart enough to launch Windows Update with IE whether it is your default browser or not.) I'm not willing to take the chance on forcing Windows Update to function in a way that is probably less than totally supported. And I'll be damned if I'll turn on Automatic Updating to poll for updates on every reboot (making the reboot time longer) for a once a month update. If you remember to do it, that's fine. I know I wouldn't. :-) I'm not willing to turn it on wholesale, so it just notifies me of updates. (This is another "war" entirely--my computers will reboot when I want them to, *if* I want them to. Nothing tees me off quite as well as finding that a machine is sitting there looking intelligent at the login window, with all of my VMware sessions and other stuff gone.) The Automatic Updates service is probably going to be running anyway. (Microsoft has been in some hot water for Automatic Updates updating itself even when supposedly turned off.) Same thing with "Dell Updates", "HP Updates", "Lenovo Updates", "Acrobat Updates", "Java Updates". * Those manufacturer supplied updater tools are just another reason why a clean install of the OS is almost invariably the first thing I do after setting up a computer. Acrobat updates really should be installed if you use it, as the majority of them are security related. I suppose you could use something like Foxit Reader instead, but I didn't really see a reason to switch. When was the last time HP provided ANYONE with a useful update? Probably never. Even today I still see some systems running the HP BackWeb based updater tool on Windows 98. Yes, I'm sure that ten (or eleven, for Win98FE) years later, there will updates! Uh-huh. William |

But no go.. And I'll be damned if I'll turn on Automatic Updating to poll for updates on every reboot (making the reboot time longer) for a once a month update. I can remember only one Windows update in the past 3 years or so that was provided on a day other than Patch Tuesday. Me neither, but I do let it notify me when there is an update available. The *ONLY* auto update I do is Nortons. .. Ben Myers |

Windows Update and Patch Tuesday
Maybe not a direct problem. I think(there could be the problem) it opens the default internet browser, and mine is Firefox. Are you saying that you: 1. Installed the "Windows Update" add-on for Firefox 2. Initialized it by clicking "tools" then "Windows Update" in the drop down menu. .....& it launched a separate IE window? That has never happened to me. Firefox just switches the rendering engine on the current tab to IE & runs Windows Update in that tab only. |

I'll have to wait until next month to observe more exactly what happened. Still, whatever it did, I like the convenience of doing a Windows update via Firefox... Ben Myers |

"Ben Myers" wrote in message ... I'll have to wait until next month to observe more exactly what happened. Still, whatever it did, I like the convenience of doing a Windows update via Firefox... Ben Myers Sorry for the confusion Ben, but I was replying to this reply to your original post by JDa^T: "Nothing cool about this! I applied the plug-in and tried it out. This is what I received: *Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site. * To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later." I was actually reinforcing your experience with the ease & convenience of this add-on & asking JDa^T exactly if & how he installed the add-on. Rich |
