expensive. Why is the 3800 X2 less expensive ? X1 3800 = 2400mhz 1mb cache. X2 3800 = 2000mhz 512kb L2 cache per core X2 4000 = 2000mhz 1mb L2 cache per core (not yet announced but im sure its to come.....) X2 4200 = 2200mhz 512kb L2 cache per core X2 4400 = 2200mhz 1mb L2 cache per core X2 4600 = 2400mhz 512kb L2 cache per core X2 4800 = 2400mhz 1mb L2 cache per core 200mhz is all the difference between the 3800 and 4200. And that would be hardly noticeable. Im also willing to bet that *ALL* (ok ok 99.5% hehe) X2 3800s will overclock to 4200 speeds, if not 4600 speeds. I have a X2 4400 myself and im very happy with it. So happy that when the 4000 comes out (if it does) i will probably by 2 more for my other systems.......(i prefer 1mb cores) -- From Overlag - Adam Webb |

The die size is smaller 147mm^2 vs 233 and 199mm^2 for its big brothers. Smaller die = lower cost. The cache accounts for a major percentage of the transistors. This was designed with a 512 cache, The 4200 with 1mb and 512 caches are the same die, when there were defects in the 1mb AMD made it a 512. I have read that the 3800+ doesn't OC quite as much as the 4200+, but that may improve as AMD gets the bugs worked out of the manufacturing process. Gollum |
