AV8 memory

i have an Abit AV8 motherboard.
the board runs ok with the 2x256mb Kingston DDR memory modules supplied at
the time.
however we cannot get this board to accept any other memory. Tried generic
and kingston value 512mb DDR's
if one 512 generic is in, it won't boot
if one 512 kingston in it's okay, with 2 it won't boot (tried all the memory
slots)
if i put one 256mb and 1 512 kingston in it works.
i'm confused!!
Bios is 26.
Any suggestions for compatible memory i can buy?
Strangely the failed memory works fine in my AV8 with same bios version.
