hi, does anyone know how the bios manage to indentify a particular hard disk
model and serial number?

where does this information come from?

The bios asks the hard drive, during the beginning of the boot up.
This is a very basic explanation.

From the hard drive itself. Bios query all IDE devices and get the
model, type, and size.

BIOS issues the IDENTIFY DEVICE command.
You can find the description in ATA/ATAPI specification. (www.t13.org)
