Default Linux hanging while trying to write cd-r.

Hi,
I have a 2 year old cendyne cd-writer... plugged it in place
of a cd-rom device on a redhat 9 installation, and installed
the ide-scsi module... when I try to write a cd, the whole
system is hung... hard-reboot is the only option. Help pls...
