OFF as it offers more instability than performance in most cases.

Radeon cards do support fastwrites but there is no ' speed gain ', so no, pointless risk, turn em off. And while your at it always disable DDC in the monitor tab of the CPl in WinXP / 2000 to be able to use ALL the refresh rates and avoid the 60Hz RR bug. BoroLad |

I had just did a format and fresh install last month and when I put in the Omega 4.4's I selected ON. Big mistake.. I spent the last 2 weeks trying to trouble shoot why I keep crashing to desktop at odd times.. just installed 4.5's yesterday and selected OFF. No crashes or lockups yet. fingers crossed Pluvious |

... I have read conflicting reports on whether to have it on or off. what do you guys think? I have two computers with Radeon cards. One machine is a PIII-933 with a 128MB Radeon 9200SE and Intel 815 chipset motherboard. The other computer is a P4 Northwood C 2.8GHz with a 128MB 9800 Pro and Intel 865 series chipset motherboard. On the PIII system, I get AGP 4x and fast writes off by default. The P4 defaults to AGP 8x and fast writes on. Neither computer gives me any trouble. Hell, even Command & Conquer Generals is quite playable on the PIII in 800x600 resolution, which I think is a considerable feat. I don't think fast writes is something to worry about unless you're having trouble. As others have mentioned though, turn it off if you think you are having problems related to the video card. |
