Default Update on "Cheap" DVD+ Burner

I installed the burner and tried it. I tried two kinds of media so
far. The first is TDK 4x and they burn flawlessly at 8x.

Not bad for $69.99 after rebate!

Then I tried some Fujis that had no speed marking. The burning
software limited the speed to 2.4x.

I wonder how the software (Nero) knows what speed is OK? If it is
relying on the software readable manufacturer information that is
encoded on each disc does that mean that the TDK discs say one thing
on the box, but have something else encoded on the disc?

The maximum speed may be encoded on the disc, in which case the drive
will adhere to it. On CDs, if no max is in the ATIP, the drive will use
a value from its firmware; I do not know about the situation on DVDs and
you might check in an appropriate newsgroup. (As the name of this
newsgroup indicates, it is for CD recording, though some of us write
DVDs as well.)
