PCIE in a PCI slot?

wrote: Never seeing an actual PCIE card, can I purchase a PCIE video card and use it in my PCI based MOBO until I can upgrade to a new MOBO? P.Xex Tomshardware currently has an article on "PC Interfaces": http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20...i-express.html Examine the picture at the very bottom of that web page. The pin spacing of the two connector types is different. The signal levels, speeds, and methods are all different. Only smoke and ruin await, if you mix up those sockets. PCI and PCI-Express are not interchangable. Put your money in the bank, and when you've got enough, buy a shiny new PCI Express motherboard and PCI Express video card. There are PCI video cards still for sale. You could buy one of those, use it in your current computer, and use it in a new PCI Express computer. Until enough types of PCI Express add-in cards are available, new motherboards will continue to have both PCI and PCI Express slots. The performance of a PCI video card would not be very awe inspiring, but if you are building a server (which really doesn't need video) or just a machine for email, a simple PCI video card would be plenty. There are FX5200, FX5500, ATI 9250 and the like, available in PCI format. If you are a gamer, all of these choices would suck, for any serious eye candy. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...d&InnerCata=48 I assume you are a gamer, in which case, save your pennies until you can buy the new motherboard and matching video card type. Chances are, you'll also need a new power supply, as the power connectors needed have a few differences compared to your current computer. By the time you've saved your money, the price on these should have dropped a bit. X1800XT 512MB $579 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102629 Paul |

PCIE in a PCI slot?
Just a thought. If a MOBO is PCIE capable, are the other few slot also
considered PCIE or are they PCI. If they aren't then that would mean I would have to purchase new modems, sound cards... ? P.Xex |

P.Xex It means that you only need a PCI-E graphics card. All the other stuff will remain the same. No AGP slot. PCI-E replaced that. There are other PCI-e slots for future use but you won't need that yet. |

Nope. Totally different socket size and voltage.
