There seem to be several different model numbers that go by the moniker

"15R", so you could get conflicting information from people who don't own

the exact same model.

I've worked on a few N5110 15R's, and a major detraction is how they mount

the hard drive. It isn't easy to swap or replace because it's mounted

directly to the bottom side of the motherboard, and the laptop has to be

completely disassembled and the motherboard removed just so you can flip it

over and get to the hard drive. It's a very stupid design. I don't know

if other 15R models are the same or not.

I liked the 15R but my daughter chose a Asus laptop. I've seen it and

I like the lit up keyboard. Otherwise, no comment since I didn't play

with it (came with windows 8).

Update: daughter had new hardware problems with the new Asus so she

swapped out for a HP laptop. I like the HP better (compared to Asus)

and so does she (aside from the fact that it works correctly). It

cost $100 more but includes among other things, 8 gigs ram and capable

of 16, better sound and 750gig drive. Of course it has windows 8

x64, which with my limited exposure to, is okay but I think the OS has

some bugs and/or inconveniences. For my own laptop I'll stick with

windows 7 x64 tho I only have 4gigs of ram. Oh one thing that's

really nice about many new laptops now IMO, is the back lit keyboard.

I definitely want that on my next laptop.

Good luck with the HP! The consumer models are difficult to maintain... Ben Myers

My daughter had a Dell. Then she bought a Toshiba, it was okay. Then she bought an HP...she was not happy! I'm not sure what she has now! (Maybe an Mac...I don't want to know!)

Next she's going to buy a Ford and really freak me out! JK

Well the reviews (several sources) were good on her model and I admit
it seemed nice to me but time will tell. I guess this will be an
experience for her to learn. Not really sure why her co-workers spoke
bad of Dell. I admit tho I'm a bit jealous of her 8 gigs ram and
back lit keyboard but I'm okay with what I have. I've managed with
what I have so far so I should be able to continue to

To be honest, I don't even know what their worth and may not even be
worth the bother. Come to think of it, not even sure where to donate
it tho I think one or two sister in laws might take some off my hands.

Take a look at freecycle.org. It's like Craig's List (with local areas or
groups) except everything is free. I've gotten rid of lots of old
computers that way. Even non-working computers, as there are always
hobbyists and tinkerers on the lookout for free parts they can scavenge to
cobble together a working computer.

About 6-7 years ago I got a dozen computers from a defunct real estate
office, mostly obsolete Win98 eMachines. I put them on freecycle and a
high school kid an hour away drove over and picked up the whole lot. He
was setting up a "computer repair class" for his senior project and he
needed anything he could find to give students hands-on experience taking
things apart, swapping parts, troubleshooting hardware, etc. I couldn't
think of a more ideal second life for all those old machines.

A cool glow in the dark keyboard might seem fun, but it's likely going to
reduce battery time.

I can't think of a more worthy end for the computers
to heroically to end their lives.

I have not torn down a 15R yet, but I'll bet it is just as much of a repair nightmare as the 14R (N4010) I just tore down. Complete disassembly to remove the hard drive. What ever happened to the little hatch on the bottom? Remove two screws and out comes the cover. Two more screws, at most, and out comes the hard drive.

I hope that the HP never needs repairs, and, if it does, it is easier than the N4010. I guess I can't say enough about how bad the N4010 is... Ben

Beginning to sound like all the brands having the same nightmare
repair horrors on the newer generation laptops

Hey, we make 'em cheap and hard to repair so you have to throw it away when it breaks. I'm sure HP or Dell would provide some other bull**** excuse for poor maintainability. But if you can trade in your car every two years, why not your computer, too? ... Ben
