Rebuilding a Dell 2300 ... keeps shutting down during Windows installation
Anyone:
I just broke down my 2300 Dimension. Pulled the old hard drive. (nothing important there, crashed anyway) Replaced the power supply with a 450w (new) Installed 2 new Seagate hard drives and a new dvd rom. To start, I setup only the master drive to load the OS (Windows 2000 pro) as well as the floppy, and the original cd / rw During the initial stage of loading the OS, the system shuts down as soon as it gets to "Loading Windows". Exchanged the power supply with new ones ... 3 times! Same issue. Jumped the CMOS ... (again) and started over. Checked the CMOS and set the 1.8 cpu to clock at 10 (default, I think) No other changes were made. I'm stumped Anybody got any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks... |

sounds like overheating due to heatsink not tightly attached to cpu.
watche the lights in the back, do they all turn solid green beforecrashing? what are the lights in the back after the system crashes? could also be bad hard drive driver loaded. did you try safe mode? I favor the overheating idea, as those heatsinks must be flush and the clips snapped tight. However, I didn't note the OP had done anything at all to the CPU, so that might not be it. Could be the new(er) power supplies. Does the original PS still work by any chance? If so, try it. Could be any of the new drives. I'd disconnect all unneeded drives from both data and power, remove any cards and try a minimal boot to start....... Stew |

Rebuilding a Dell 2300 ... keeps shutting down during Windows installation
Jay B:
The first think I noted was that the heat sink retention module was damaged. So I opted to open case the install so I could at least get the first drive loaded with the OS. The hard drives are new 80gb Barracudas. The power supplies are Kingwin 4 fan 450w (new) You may be right ... the cpu could be reading hot even thought shroud is off. I never thought that would be an issue. Is there anyway of getting this thing up and running without a heat sink, or the shroud? I've bench built several systems this way ... Thanks "Jay B" wrote in message ... sounds like overheating due to heatsink not tightly attached to cpu. watche the lights in the back, do they all turn solid green beforecrashing? what are the lights in the back after the system crashes? could also be bad hard drive driver loaded. did you try safe mode? Rebuilding a Dell 2300 ... keeps shutting down during Windows installation
S. Lewis:
Just threaded to Jay B. In response your questions ... I only installed the floppy, cd/rw and master drive to load the OS the new dvd rom and slave drive are not hooked up yet. Oh ...the memory is new as well .. 2 sticks - ps133 512mb. I guess I'll have to find a good heat sink and toss the shroud as well ... Any suggestions? Thanks. "S.Lewis" wrote in message ... i would never ever run any computer again without a valid heat sink, fan
and shroud. instant death. i've been there, done that, its works for the older 486's but not for these hotter pentiums. they need to be kept cool. Rebuilding a Dell 2300 ... keeps shutting down during Windows installation
Jay B.
Curiously, I have 4 - AMD 3200 socket A systems with Gigabyte motherboards, 3 hard drives, card readers, dvd rws and an assortment of 6.1 to 7.1 sound cards and BFG graphic cards & all the bells and whistles including custom wire connectors etc. Every one was bench constructed without a heat sink. I did that to make sure the stuff worked because the cases are custom as well. Remember the old Super Flower aluminum cases with windows on both sides? Find the fan wires! ... it was tricky, but they look phenomenal ... I will admit ... the room I use for building and upgrading has it's own ac system. It gets mighty cold in there. I guess I'll have to find a good heat sink for this machine, but I have no idea what to use for a socket 370. If the heat sink retention module is damaged, remove it and replace it with a
good one. Then get the right heat sink for a Dell 2300/2350/2400 (and other models of Dell towers)... Rebuilding a Dell 2300 ... keeps shutting down during Windows installation
Ben:
Found a bunch of people who sell socket 478 heat sink retention modules for about $1.98 each. But, will they will work over socket 370? Or is there a better cpu cooling system for a socket 370, like a copper heat sink/fan combo? Thanks "Ben Myers" wrote in message ... Ben Myers I'm not sure that both the retention module (base), the heatsink, and the clips are not all proprietary; in fact, I believe they may be. The heatsink literally snaps into the retention module (which has snap tabs) and the module also is slotted for the (2) green plastic clips. In theory, the clips aren't even needed as the heatsink is very tight when snapped in place on both sides. The OP is going to a lot of trouble for a very replaceable machine. Honestly, they weren't that good when new, imo. Stew |
