Systems Freeze on Bootup
Hi there,
My Brother In-Law is running an AMD K6-500 with WinMe. He was having a lot of problems with the system freezing. Now he is unable to turn his system on without Scandisk automatically coming up then the system freezes at 12% (always 12%). He can't get into Safemode. Question: Does this sound like a hardware issue and if so what do you think it could be? Thanks Carl |

Of course, WinME itself could be hosed. It could be a number of things, including a bad mainboard. Start by removing all adapters except the video card and see whether it boots up. If it does, add the cards back until it goes kaflooey again. Then you'll know which one was bad. It that doesn't work, it could be RAM or the mainboard. I wouldn't rule out a failing CPU, but they often outlast mainboards and adapter cards. -- All views expressed above are my own. Nobody else would claim them! -- Bill Pridgen -- |

You will loose all of your files though :-( |

It freezes at 12% while scan disk is running Create a DOS-bootable floppy, perhaps? (see command reference for FORMAT or put a floppy in the drive, open a command prompt, and enter the command FORMAT A: /S) or I think it still exists in XP - Go to the Control Panel, couble-click the Add/Remove Programs, click the Startup Disk tab and then click the Create Disk button. It will put together a nice bootable diskette with all the tools you need for recovery and for supporting other command line applications that might require HIMEM and/or EMM386. |
