CPU and Overclocking help
I have decided to upgrade my system. I recently purchased a motherboard,
memory and Video. My mind pretty much mad up on the 2.8GHz CPU 800Mhz FSB 512 K cache, now Intel releases the 2.8GHz CPU 800 MHz FSB 1meg Cache Prescott chip. New Gear Motherboard - Abit -VT7 PT880 Video - Sapphire 9600 Atlantis 256 DDR400 Memory - 4 - 256 Meg PC3200 What would be the better of the two chips, and what would be some possible over clocking combinations? Thanks in advance for any help. Roland |

Well i heard the new Prescott isn't all that hot in terms of performance
Not sure how it is in terms of overclocking. On Tue, 17 Feb 2004 23:48:57 GMT, "Knot@Work" wrote: :I have decided to upgrade my system. I recently purchased a motherboard, :memory and Video. Actually is VERY hot... B^) In terms of performance, the type of
applications will make more of a difference with a "Prescott" than with a "Northwood" because of the longer pipeline. It comes down to the applications are written and how well the "Prescott" circuitry keeps the long pipeline filled (branch prediction algorithm, for example... backwards branches are taken ~ 85% of the time, forward branches, ~ 40% of the time; does the "Prescott" predict correctly enough of the time with the applications used? The real "Prescott" stands up when the clock speed get higher...the CPU has a higher potential speed than the "Northwood" and a new set of vector arithmetic instructions; the question is, are the early chips going to be as conservatively speed rated as is usual for Intel? -- Phil Weldon, pweldonatmindjumpdotcom For communication, replace "at" with the 'at sign' replace "mindjump" with "mindspring." replace "dot" with "."
