Default Ex Corporate Problem

I recently aquired a Compaq EP/p500 (ex Corporate)
It had Windows 98 on it, so i formatted it and, when i went to install XP
i was informed that "an operating system is already in the folder you are
trying to install XP on" or some such guff.
I proceeded with the install and it installed fine, picking up all the
hardware etc
The problem arose when i tried to log on to the internet. it would fire up
the
DSL, but the ISP wouldn't recognise my password, and it wouldnt "set" in
XP... always
defaulting to "enter your password here" etc
I even went through the internet settings with tech support at my ISP, and
they confirmed they were correct.
Could there be something written into (onto?) the BIOS to prevent a computer
(which i assume was
part of a network somewhere) logging on in its own right?
If so, is there a "fix" for this, or is it a case of a quick "punt" into the
nearest scrap bin?

TIA

Egremont

New computer - was the caplock key on for the password? Sometimes it's
not clearly evident that the key is pressed on an unfamiliar keyboard.
This happens also with the numlock key.

Q

Forgive my total ignorance on this, but are you saying that all i
need to do is hit either the caplock, or numlock key and all should
be ok?

Egremont

If the caplock or numlock is toggled on, a lower case password cannot be
typed in properly and will fail - passwords are case sensitive. It was
just a thought, since either can be toggled and not be noticed when the
computer boots. However, since I can read your post just fine,
obviously neither is on now.

You might try the site dslreports troubleshooting at
http://www.dslreports.com/faq or the Microsoft usenet server
news://msnews.microsoft.com and the group
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web.
