NTFS and FAT32 drives
Xp Pro SP2
NTFS file system. MSI 865 MB. I tried to put in a couple older drives to check on whats in them. They are FAT32 drives. My computer hung from the get go on them. Booting up took for ever and it didn't recognize them at all. I seem to remember on XP being able to read and copy to FAT 32 drives. |

Sounds like a master/slave, power or ide cable problem when you added the drive. Verify the FAT32 drives are set as slave, check the bios is set to auto or if its a very old IDE drive you might need to enter the cyls, track info manually. |

John: If you're booting from the "older drives" in your XP environment, than it's quite likely they won't boot. It's a relatively rare occurrence that a transferred HD will boot in an XP system. Under these circumstances you would need to run a Repair install on the drive in question. If, on the other hand, you merely want to access the drive(s) for informational purposes, then there should be no problem in booting with your normal working drive and accessing the drive(s) in Windows Explorer or whatever. You're correct that XP has no problem reading FAT32 volumes. Art |
