Default Chrome blasts XP out of the water when I Exit from it

My employer uses Google Chrome for their OS (it's a school). I
installed some variant of the Chrome browser on my WindowsXP desktop
and am able to sign onto the school's website, get my email, view
paychecks, ask for time off, info on snow days etc. Very useful. I
can't make out what version of Chrome I installed.

The problem I'm having is Exiting from this site when I'm done. About
25% of the time XP will disappear in a blue screen with white letters
and a reboot takes place. When windos comes up I am notified that
Windows encountered a very serious problem and don't I want to send
the info to MicroSoft. (I'm sure MS will be thrilled to get any info
on XP which they want to disappear anyway.) I've found an Exit to
click on in Chrome, not just the big x in the upper right corner,
doesn't help. Can't use Taskmaster to close it either, same blowup.

Does anyone have any ideas how to safely Exit from Google Chrome
without destroying my WinXP session?

Might try an older version of Process Lasso. It's gone commercial, but
perhaps easiest and useful for that sort of thing. Basically it's
debugging. Watch Process Lasso and a good firewall for spawned
browser instances: If they turn up for a later cause, they can be
defined for an immediate shutdown in Process Lasso when they occur.
(Doing it is less convenient, to say the least, with a PID-identifier
and batching.)

Last, you'll need to see where and what Chrome is doing. Once there,
assuming you can prematurely exit Chrome without incident, what you do
is to build a corrective directory with a clean and uncorrupted Chrome
install. That is where, in turn, a batch file is defined (hotkeyed
for one easy and deft keystroke), to erase and be a replacement source
for whatever is offensive from a prior Chrome session. I personally
everything offensive these days, so all my browsers are set up as
indirect occurrences without residual or prior traces of connectivity.

Of course, it's really a game of cards, and I"m speaking generically
for a take on what I'm doing. I also do realize, depending on the
site, how it's constructed and demands made, that makes it its House
Rules. They don't have to play with you if they don't want or like
your browser qualifications.

I fight with some connects. They fight back. Others won't touch me
even with your barge pole;- If I really want to be with them, I've no
choice but eat it, to come back through with a totally different
browser environment they like, not me. Which I'll do.

Most do, fortunately, at least in my little circle of contacts, and
would realize which side bread goes to get buttered, and will take the
money before hiring a total kamikaze, HTML asshole to construct their
business site.

Oh, yeah. And I don't do Chrome or much Google for that matter.

BSODs have text. What is the error code?

Instead of closing the program, right-click on it in the Processes tab
and select to End Task (kill it). That will have Chrome get killed
instead of trying to gracefully exit. If the crash still happens,
something else is causing it upon the Chrome exit event. You need to
eliminate (disable) all extensions to make sure those aren't causing the
problem. Also unload/exit any software before loading Chrome that works
with Chrome, like some proxy for blocking web content, VPN, etc.

Check what extensions you installed in Chrome. Disable all of them and
retest.

Look in Event Viewer at the time of the OS crash. Might not be Chrome.
Could be the anti-virus software.

Load Windows XP in its safe mode with networking and retest with Chrome.

Disable hardware acceleration, then retest.

Browsers have hardware acceleration, for things like
compositing and font creation.

https://www.lifewire.com/hardware-ac...chrome-4125122

"... chrome://gpu into the address bar "

Adobe Flash plugin (PPAPI on Chrome) also has hardware
acceleration. Right clicking a video pane, exposes the setting.

Thanks for the ideas guys.
My Chrome browser version is 49.0.2623

I did find a Process Lasso version 6.8.0.8, dunno how to use it but
I'll muddle along.

Processes. For some reason I never thought to look in there in all my
dealings with Chrome and the school computer. I did try Taskmaster and
Ended the Chrome application from there, wasn't helpful. Anyway when I
look in Processes I find a dozen or more chrome.exe. Apparently one
for every tab I have open? I'm lazy about closing tabs and when I
can't find the one I want I just open a new one. Also I have 2 or 3
tabs with commercial entities like a television channel that lists
school closings. No telling what unprofessional junk may exist on
them. I think I'll just Bookmark those sites into Firefox and search
from there, no need to open the school's computer when there's iffish
snow.

I did notice the hardware accelleration among the Settings on my
Chrome. I'll try turning it off.

But as of now I'm pretty convinced that my lazy practice of keeping
too many tabs open may relieve my problem. We'll see. Thanks again
all. If I still crash I'll be back begging on your doorstep.

One of my browsers, after it's opened, is often ID'd by webpages for a
plug-in "wrapper" -- the browser then responds by trying to install
it. A firewall, however, detects the wrapper for a new process and
asks for permission to run it. That's where I use Process Lasso: To
stop that program (a browser proviso apparently for a related
extension), which is listed by Process Lasso for a separate program
entity apart from the browser. I define Process Lasso automatically
then quickly to close/kill it. One less annoyance.

I'm also using a Process Lasso from 2012, i.e. then freeware. I'm not
up on what limitations may be present in a 6.8.0.8 commercial
revision. (When free, it was regarded tops for a task manager
replacement.)

Chrome can't be assured for spawning out a unique side-extension for a
process, but it's something to watch for. How you "kill" a process is
another. It's different from how and what a program is attempting to
do, itself, while it is otherwise normally closing. Nor are all the
"killer" types, for removing process IDs, errantly locked or just a
premature termination, the same in every sense.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, so please forgive if this has already
been brought up...

Your much older version of Chrome may be having trouble interacting with a newer
version on the other end (latest stable version is 72.0.3626.121 released on March
1). Chrome hasn't supported XP for a long time. The only real fix could be newer
versions of Windows and Chrome.

Correction. Version for XP 32 bit is 8.9.8.98.

That would not apply to Windows 10. As a long time Chrome user, always
lots and lots of tabs, never crashed the system on exit.
