Default Samsung SSD software

My Samsung 840 EVO SSD came with a software disk. Having little
experience with SSDs I would like to know whether people recommend
installing the Samsung software.

I have no idea, but my crude understanding of this issue is that SSD stuff is still in its infancy, so you have to rely on such "third party software", so I would use it. Samsung is a pretty reputable company.

Find some reviews. One of the softwares is a
caching driver for the OS. A 1GB RAM cache is
used for frequently accessed data on the SSD.

You don't have to use that.

The hardware review sites don't usually dwell on the software
for too long, so you'll need more than one article.

I didn't install any of the software that came with my Samsung and Crucial SSDs, and Windows 7 worked just fine with them.

I don't have a Samsung, but I do have an Intel SSD. It comes with a
program called Intel SSD Toolbox. It contains an optimizer and it is
advised to use this once a week. You can do a quick or full diagnostic
scan, secure erase, firmware update, ...

IMO it can't hurt to install (and run) the software.

Once a week? To do what?

*wince* Disagree hugely - it certainly can. Using at least one version
of the WD USB drive software makes the drive unbootable, for example.

I'd recommend running *without* any additional software whenever
possible.

Optimise. -)

I don't really care /what/ it exactly happens, but Intel advises to do
this once a week. So far, my SSD hasn't blown up, so...

You probably don't install the latest firmware either. Doesn't mean
everybody should do the same... Not so long ago, I upgraded the firmware
of my SSD and guess what? No explosions either! ;-)

Yes I also upgraded the firmware on my Samsung 128Gb EVO and all I had
to do was reboot.

Meh. If the firmware on Intel SSDs were so **** it needed a hand from
an external program, they wouldn't be some of the best on the market.

I'm always up to date on software, with max a sensible few-days delay
to see if anything breaks for other people on big updates like service
packs.

Firmware is software *required* to use a device. Drivers, likewise.
Tools? Nope.

Good. Me too.
