Default "Found New Hardware" keeps popping up...

I hope someone out there has the solution to this problem.
I've bought a HP 5550 deskjet. And after installation and reboot WinXP keeps
popping up with this "Found New Hardware" message. But only to come up in a
window saying that the file could not be installed, or something in that
matter. I can only click "Finish" in this window. Then it starts all over
again with the same message over and over again.
I have called the HP support 4 times and tried something different each
time. But guess what, nothing changed. Nomatter if I use the paralel or USB
cable. I have since searched the web and found that quite a number of ppl
have had similar problems with HP printers. Someone apparently seem to have
solved this problem but I can't seem to solve it if I try to follow their
advises.
The HP support centre I called finally gave me some sort of case number, and
told me to turn the printer in where I bought it. But having read about many
others with same problems I just didn't think it would do anything to simply
get a new printer of the same make. I really think this is a great printer,
and it does work when I want to print.
I hope someone out there have THE solution to this problem.

Cheers,
Martin

You're not alone friend. XP was doing this to me on a daily basis. with an
Epson 895 and a Canon S-820 .The only solution I eventually found was to
delete the printer drivers and reinstall from that "New - New Hardware"
message. Xp didn't find the drivers either on CD. So I steered it there
gently and kindly.
Just yesterday however I needed to reregister XP as it politely informed me
my configuration had changed so many times ?? Complex ennit.
Try letting XP reinstall the printer as it worked for me with a least two
days of peace from new printers etc ...

I would try to use a network connection. If the printer allows for it. If
not, you can always get a cheap printer server from ebay for around 20-50
bucks used

Then when the printer is on the network, I would use TCP IP printing
services, that way there is no connection issues and new hardware issues.
The printer driver will be there all the time and not have to detect
anything.

This is symptomatic of a failed printer installation. You might try the
procedures on the following site to remove and reinstall the printer.
This is the site MS-MVP Cari has put up to handle XP's screwed up
hardware installation.

Try to install a new driver from hp site.
I know that inorder to install a hp printer you must 1 install the driver
and then plug the printer.
Did you do in this way?

Yes. I started by doing it exactly like the installation program told me to.
And then I tried it .... well I'v lost count but let's say 10 different
ways.
For the time I just unplug the USB cable untill I have to actually print
something.
To my surprise windows has no problem with that ;o)

I had the same problem when I upgraded to XP with my 5550. Completely
uninstall the printer, shut down the computer, make sure the power &
USB (or parallel) lines are plugged in and do a start up. When XP
informs you it has detected new hardware, point it to the software
(make sure you have the XP software for the 5550). XP will then start
to install the drivers and the HP software will open. Follow the
prompts and at completion, reboot. This solved the problem for me.
