Memory Difference?

What's the difference between laptop memory with 16 DRAM chips and those
with only 8 DRAM chips? I have a Solo 5300 and am looking to upgarde it. I
e-mail tech support and they stated that I could use sticks with 16 or 8
chips. What I don't understand though is this: The sticks with 8 chips
seem to be cheaper than 16 chips sticks. Plus no site I have seen has
listed any 8 chip stick as compatible with the Solo 5300. Here are two

What's the difference? Gateway says that 16 or 8 chips will work, am I
missing something else here between these two sticks? I'd prefer to get the
Samsung, it's what I use in my two PCs and I trust it...is the site just
wrong?

Density. Some older systems are unable to address high-density (in this case
8-chip stick) modules.

The new standard is high-density. It is cheaper to make and more widely
used.

It's up to you to guess who is right. Some memory re-sellers cover their
asses by just stating that machines made before a certain date won't support
high-density RAM.

See above. If you buy from Memory Suppliers and it doesn't work I doubt
they'll take it back as they specifically state that it won't work. They
could be wrong (and are wrong if you believe tech support). It's your call.
At the worst, if your machine doesn't support high-density RAM, you'll only
get to use half of what you install.

The 256MB Samsung module was built with eight 256Mbit chips. The 256MB Kingmax
module was built with sixteen 128Mbit chips. Your Solo 5300 uses an Intel 440ZX
chipset, which will support chip densities up to 128Mbits. You will need a
256MB module with sixteen 128Mbit chips.
