Default Free benchmark programs?

A few years ago I used to use 3DMark to benchmark my computers and get
a feel for if my tweaks were helping my gaming performance or hurting
it. I just re-visited their site and they seem to be pay only now (or
a crappy trial that only runs once).

The question: What are some FREE benchmarking tools can I use?
(preferably ones that lets you compare your results to other people)
