So why does WD want those Hitachi "DeathStar" (formerly IBM and
optimistically named "DeskStar") drives?

All the dead hard disks I have here are WD. The Seagates are all fine.

They dont. They do however want to eliminate one of the hard drive manufacturers.

That isnt the case with plenty of others.

Hitachi is currently the most reliable brand.

All the dead hard disks I have here are WD. The Seagates are all fine.

WD is ok, Seagate is just trash, especially the drives
"Made in China". All at this time. This
changes whenever a manufacturer screws up. The only
one that has not screwed up with regard to reliability
so far is Samsung.

Hope WD keeps Hitachi's 5 platter drives. It takes WD/Seagate forever to
get their 4 platter drives to 7200RPM.

It sounded like good strategy to investors, as well - WDC stock
shot up 17% yesterday, which was otherwise a down day in the
stock market. Today, it's up another 2.7%

Sad to hear that. Maybe the age of CHEAP SSD is coming soon!

My next spinning hard disk purchase would require some guessing...

That's no longer an issue after IBM dumped the glass platters!

I think Hitachi sees making SSDs as a business with more future and
more profit than making spinning disks, and Western Digital may be getting
into serving the legacy market.

It wont be a legacy market any time soon.
