When they start trying to train all these folks they will find out why most
of these migrations to Linux end up coming back to Windows. I have nothing
against Linux at all, I have it on a couple of systems myself, but for the
average workstation, especially when you have ex-Windows users, it just
doesn't work out financially.

I just don't understand what is wrong---so many people heading big
government IT operations seem to be crazy. Massachusetts, Munich,
Indiana, Brazil, Dutch cities, Belgium all keep trying to switch to open
source. Those guys just don't seem to learn. They must not know what
you know.

Here is some of the latest from Munich. It seems that they are still on
track, although behind the original schedule:

Hoosier Daddy? In Indiana Schools, It's Linux

By Edward F. Moltzen, CRN
4:10 PM EDT Wed. Aug. 16, 2006

How's this for back-to-school fashion: More than 20,000 Indiana students
are now Linux-enabled under a state grant program to roll out low-cost,
easy-to-manage workstations, which are running various flavors of the
open-source operating system.

Not only Munich and Indiana High Schools are still going forward, but so
is Massachusetts IT.

Here is an excerpt from the Mid-Year Statement Regarding ODF
Implementation, by Louis Gutierrez,Chief Information Officer,
Information Technology Division, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, August
23, 2006, found at
http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=itdmodul..._ltr&csid=Aitd

Specifically, we plan to implement ODF, using translator technology plugged in to Microsoft Office, in a group of early adopter agencies, including the Massachusetts Office on Disability, by January 1, 2007. Thereafter, we plan to migrate all Executive Department agencies to compliance with the standard, in phases, by June of 2007.

This shows that ODF is still preferred in Massachusetts:

State’s Snub on File Formats Caught Microsoft by Surprise
Carol Sliwa

December 04, 2006 (Computerworld) -- According to an e-mail written by a Massachusetts official, Microsoft was given just over 30 days advance warning that the state’s IT division wouldn’t be including Office Open XML as an acceptable file format in a draft of Version 3.5 of its open-standards blueprint posted online on Aug. 31, 2005.

Says the netcop wanna-be troll with an aging system. The two go hand
in hand. Microsoft is stifling high technology by keeping the
Windows source code closed. Closed source adds to the other factors
that give Microsoft a stranglehold on the applications market.
Closed source also reduces trust among the masses. People will not
willingly accept powerful devices that are run by hidden code.
Closed source has no place in the future IMO except maybe in
military applications.

Linux is hardly viable for most personal computer users, but like
Windows it will install on a personal computer therefore generally
it is not off-topic in this group.
