They basically sell junk. They are not highly rated and are more prone to damage and out of the box non functional. A friend of mine purchased one of their pierces of junk and he had to have me fix it since the times the unit was repaired it was not functional after a few days. Although I am by no means an expert on the building of lap tops I did my best and it now works. He purchased a Dell Computer for him and his wife and now the child has the Gateway. If you have read stories at the http://www.ripoffreport.com you'll see that your not alone. Also many articles have been written at http://www.news.com and http://www.cnet.com about the Gateway junk they are selling. As of last week many articles are stating they are losing money hand over fist and that the future looks gloomy for their company to stay afloat. Dell and HP(Compaq) are again leaders in the field for sales and service. But as I have been told at work got to the Dell or HP sites and you'll read many horror stories on their service and support. Mainly about the poor trained technicians and the parceling out of service calls to India where many folks cannot even understand the tech's and the constant non calls back and the deliberate hanging up on customers etc. Similar to the Packard Bell USA of old. before they were defunct. My lap top is a Dell and it has been trouble free. In fact right now the one I use is on sale at http://www.dell.com/tv it was $799 US after a $100 rebate. It is a little more than what was advertised since I had the wireless 803.1b card installed in the unit for wireless use. it also has the RJ-45 connection for regular NIC access. And a 92.V 56K modem for dial up service. RR gives you free dial up for 10 hours and it works pretty good. Elector |

When I explained the location of the 2 cracks
They agreed it could only be caused by the bezel removal I was told it is a frequent problem for this repair They onlt warrant repairs for 30 days I have a 3yr warranty 5 months left I was ****ed abot the shipping 1 way My warranty said 2 ways They have the right to change that I did not purchase the unit My mother in law did They finally said At least 1 person did The unit is my unit The chasis was a rebuilt one from another person They just screwed up the serial number It had the serial number on it and 2 stickers attached with the original serial number "Ben Myers" wrote in message ... "Is Gateway going the way of Packard Bell?" Unfortunately, many signs point in that direction. I've serviced (usually upgrades, not repairs) a lot of 2-3 year old Gateway towers, and the overall quality has been excellent. Lately, Gateway has had a falloff in product quality, and Ted Waitt back in the cost-cutting saddle on the back of the cow has done little to improve prospects. As far as I'm concerned, the straw that broke the cow's back is the ludicrous venture into Country Stores, typically placed in high rent but low traffic storefronts, mostly satellites to major shopping malls. A storefront showroom with only one brand is inconsistent with the evolution to commodity personal computers, even among name brands. Hell, all you do is change the plastic and the BIOS splash screen and one brand cannot be distinguished from another. The other consumer-oriented name brands, HP, eMachines, and the other rubbish have gotten one thing right. They get the Best Buys, Freys, WalM*rts, Staples and OfficeMax to pay for the expensive display space. I confess I have never been in love with Gateway notebooks, and I'm not surprised at the reliability issues. IBM ThinkPads and Dell Inspirons have far better reliability. Toshiba and Sony notebooks are reliable, too, but their service is usually terrible. And, of course, the whole industry (not just Gateway) suffers from the lack of competence of support personnel, with either screwdriver or phone set in hand. Lots and lots of turnover. Customers who become irate when company policies are explained. Low pay. Inadequate training. Wait until you get a support person who speaks in heavily accented British-trained English. Last point: Software companies, following the lead of Microsoft, routinely change terms, conditions, warranties, and all else by referring you to their on-line virtual version. Nobody has yet pushed on the legality of this approach. But, if you have a warranty and it is printed on paper, the terms cannot be changed legally. If a company chooses to ignore its own printed warranty terms, there are several ways to get legal redress...
