Default Please help with upgrade info

Hi . Thanks for the info in an earlier post about doom3 and upgrading my pc.
Well, someone recommended downloading a system info tool so I knew what was
in the box and what i could upgrade to, which i have done. But, I still dont
know what I can upgrade to and wondered if someone could help?! Then i can
get on and order the stuff.
For instance, with the motherboard info below, how do I know what processor
I could put in it? Are athlon 64's the best? What extra memory should I buy?
Another 512mb chip to go next to existing? Please, if someone can help.
Also, will a nvidea GeForce 6800 Ultra actually fit in my machine?!

Many thanks for any help

Since you have an Athlon XP chip now, you will need a new motherboard if
you want to get an Athlon 64 processor. You should be able to use a GeForce
6800 Ultra with a system that has an agp port if your power supply is good
enough. Since your system has integrated video, I doubt that you have
a poweful enough power supply. Your computer case is probably small,
and doesn't have enough room for enough fans to adequately cool the
6800 ultra. You basically have two choices that make sense. The first
is to go all out and get a new Athlon 64 system with a 6800 ultra card,
or to get a mid priced video card(perhaps $80-$150?) and add that
to your system. A very high end video card will be a waste for your
system, since the rest of your system will be a bottleneck for it.

SNIP
well your motherboard specs can be found here http://tinyurl.com/5cyou

Your motherboard only supports PC2100 Ram which operates at 133Mhz so
effectively a 266Mhz FSB. Which is going to be a HUGE bottleneck for the
rest of the system. Looking at all the info you have posted there, I would
assume you have a prebuilt machine. If you want to run decent with your
system there a couple of things you need to buy. First I would recommend a
better PSU prebuilt PSU's usually come with crap for PSU. I am gonna
recommend a -MINIMUM- 480 Watt name brand since you are planning on throwing
in a high end vid card. Your main bottleneck right now is actually your
motherboard and ram combo. I would recommend replacing both. You could get
something like an Asus A7n8x series board. I have one and love it, they do
very well in the reviews as well. Your processor will support a 333Mhz FSB
so I would buy atleast Pc2700 Ram, I would go for PC3200 if you can get it,
just because if you later on decide to upgrade again your ram has more
reusability. On your case...most pre-built cases I have seen do not have
adequate airflow to cool the "higher" end stuff. This leaves you with two
options, 1.)Buy a new case. 2.)Mod your case, get a hole saw and start
cutting...
As far as your video card goes too, I would recommend buying an after market
heatsink for it. The heatsinks that come with the cards just don't cut it.

The Athlon 64 bit processors do do EXTREMELY well for gaming in Doom 3.
However you are looking at quite a bit more money invested. However the
return (in my eyes anyway) is well worth it.

HTH

system report snipped

The largest bottleneck for your system (towards playing Doom3) is
the integrated KM266 video... it is roughly on par with an OEM
TNT2 video card, not even 1/4 as fast as it'd need be.

As another poster mentioned, assess your power supply... the best
upgrade for gaming will be a mid to higher end video card, but
such a card would require PSU replacement too (not necessarily
but it's likely).

Your CPU isn't optmal but not "horrible", should allow playable
framerates. The memory (@ 512MB) is not optimal but again,
enough for a playable Doom3. Memory & FSB rate of 133MHz/DDR266
is also non-optimal but enough for Doom3.

In other words buying a better video card (and PSU if needed),
would be a significant difference. To get much higher
performance than that you'd need rebuild whole system, and you'd
still need the new video card either way so that would seem to be
the first purchase.
