PowerDVD required with Lite On Combo?

Just got the Lite On combo CD reader and burner and DVD reader. Its
sparse manual is not clear about whether PowerDVD is required to play a
DVD.

I am using W98SE. Do I need to install PowerDVD to play a DVD?

You usually need some software and codecs installed in order to view DVD
movies.

If you don't already have DVD player software installed just use PowerDVD.
It's one of the better players available.

Some commercial DVDs come with software to play them.
Go to blockbuster and rent one with the pcfriendly logo.

Mine came with the same software bundle. It's okay to play DVDs on.
I prefer to use Mediamatics DVD player. I also downloaded DVD Shrink
for preparing DVD-9 movies to burn on the standard DVD-5 blanks (4.7
GB). Then I burn the DVDs using Nero 5.5.10.54. I would think that
LiteOn would package something better for recording.
