Default Tablet PCs done in Linux and VIA

With Microsoft targeting this market as one of its strategic future growth
areas, this must not come as good news that Linux is also being positioned
there. And that VIA processor probably doesn't have the horsepower to run
the WinXP properly either.

A 1GHz VIA Antaur? It'll run WinXP without breaking much of a sweat,
so long as you put a bit of memory on it. It's every bit as fast as
the 1GHz Transmeta Crusoe, and quite a bit faster than the old 600MHz
Crusoe processor, and those chips ran WinXP on tablets. HP sells a
Celeron 800MHz tablet PC, which should perform pretty similarly to the
1GHz VIA chip in just about everything other than 3D games (and who
the hell plays 3D games on tablet?!). The chips are fairly speedy,
especially given their low power consumption and VERY low cost.

The real big question is the application software. Things like good
quality handwriting recognition software and the ability to make
applications work within the constraints of a tablet (ie just a
stylus, no mouse or keyboard) are the real keys to success, not the
processing power of the thing.
