Help - I can't get XP to install on a K8N Ultra-9 SiI3114 SATA port
Thanks in advance for any ideas - this should be a great system if I
can get the Raptor to be seen by XP! I have a Giga-byte K8N Ultra-9 with F5 BIOS and a new 74GB Raptor. I'm trying to install XP on the single Raptor on a Silcon Image 3114 SATA port. Beore trying to install, you need to go into the 3114 BIOS and define your single hard drive as a JBOD. Also, the mobo BIOS should have an entry for hard disk boot order and you should see the JBOD created by the 3114; it's called SCSI-0 SiI JBOD (about). I do see the Raptor in the mobo BIOS under hard disk boot order. When booting off of the SATA1 ports controlled by the Silicon Image 3114 controller you then need to use the Gigabyte CD to make a driver floppy by selecting "SiI3114 Raid5" and using that floopy with F6 during the XP isntall, which I did. The mobo BIOS sees the Raptor JBOD as a SCSI drive. I boot off the XP CD and hit F6 and specify my floppy driver disk for the 3114. I hit enter to continue, more drivers load, and then the system does a soft reboot. I suppose that I've got a BIOS setting issue so I've tried a lot of things, like disabling SATA/RAID, different drivers from Silicon Image's web site, even a different XP boot CD. Any ideas? I've followed Giga-Byte's manuals to a tee and tried the most common suggestion of disabling the SATA/RAID setting in the mobo BIOS. Thanks, Jim |

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the tip - the GB driver cd has 3 SiI3114 versions: - SiI3114 - SiI3114 Raid - SiI3114 Raid 5 I'll try the first 2 driver options asap. The main mobo manual's first troubleshooting entry covers this issue and refers you to the SiI3114 manual. The SI manual emphatically says to only use the SiI3114 Raid 5 version but they might be assuming I'm using a RAID set on the controller, not just a stand alone drive. The SiI3114 BIOS and the manual say that you must set up a single drive as "JBOD" even though it's not Just a Bunch Of Disks (which can be individually accessed, concatenated, or RAID sets depending on the controller). The SiI BIOS would be a little clearer if it just had a "single drive" option. Thanks again, Jim |

Solved!
The problem wasn't getting the drive recognized it was the Gigabyte mobo BIOS (version F5). I upgraded to the F5 BIOS *before* installing the OS. I tried the SiI3114 SATA ports, the Nvidia SATA2 ports, and finally an IDE drive and IDE1. No good. Then I tried to load Win2000 and instead of rebooting at the end it just hung at "Setup Is Starting Windows 2000". I Googled this and found a Microsoft KB article talking about the HAL not being specified correctly to Windows setup. I backed the mobo BIOS down to F4 and problem solved! I could load the Raptor on the SiI3114 port using the Gigabtye CD driver and now I have XP up and running. Nice board except F5 is bad bad bad! Hopefully F6 will fix it. Thanks, Jim |

Thanks, Jim Jim, Bios version F6 has been out since 8-11-2005. Have you tried it? I'm about to put a system together with this board. I have all the parts scattered about in front of me. Since they released the F6 bios so soon after F5, I will heed your warning about F5. regards, tlviewer |

The F6 version installed by using the @BIOS utility from the included nVidia media CD. If you used the "internet update" switch it did try and use the F5. Instead, I went to the home page for this board, grabbed version F6, then used the "Update New Bios switch" in @BIOS. http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/...%20Ultra-9.htm Now to make a dual boot with SuSE 9.3 x64 ... regards, tlviewer |
