Default P4PE bios checksum error after being unplugged

When my old P4PE-based system is unplugged (or switched off at the power
strip) overnight, I'll get a BIOS checksum error on the first boot of
the next day and have to re-enter all my BIOS parameter changes.

This started after the system was in storage for about 2 months while
the basement was being remodeled.

My first thought was to replace the battery on the board, but a google
search shows others with similar problems which weren't fixed with a new
battery, but none of the hits had any fixes for the problem.

I'm going to replace the battery anyway, but does anybody have any other
suggestions?

Cross bridges when you come to them. Try changing the battery first.

What's the fun of that?

Try changing the battery first.

Well ... OK.

Visual inspect the MB to see if it suffered any ill effects from
storage. It's not caked with dust or something is it?

And, yeah, change the battery first.

"And, yeah, change the battery first."

And later, possibly change the jumper setting to clear the BIOS real time
clock.

Well, that's all it took.

The old battery read 1.4V; I didn't have the presence of mind to measure
the new one before installing it. Looks like the battery lasted almost
exactly 6 years.

About as mine (changed mine last year).
Not very expensive, so no big problem.
