Default Dell XPS 435T BIOS doesn't see full HD capacity

I have 2010 Dell XPS435T (also known as a Studio XPS 9000), running
Windows 7. I want to change the data HD (D from a 1.5TB to a 3TB
drive. Using an eSATA docking station I have configured the 3TB drive
with a single GPT partitiion, formatted it, and copied the data from
my original disk onto it. With the HD in the docking station, Windows
sees the full 3TB, and everything looks good.
When I booted the computer with the new disk installed, Windows found
it and installed a driver. Device Manager can see the HD, and reports
that the most up to date driver is installed, and the disk is working
properly. However explorer.exe won't load (the error message is
'Server execution failed') and the new D: is not accessible.
The BIOS recognizes the disk, but only recognizes 801.66 GB. I thought
from reading up before I bought a 3TB drive that it would work OK as a
data disk, but so far it hasn't..
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
