Default How do you get a printer to be "active" ??

Hey all
An HP printer that worked fine on other comps, plugged in a LPT1 port of a
HP computer, no printing, no testprint, nothing wrong in the
installation...When you want to print (eg in Word) it says printer
inactive...and yes it's turned on ! and yes its being otherwise recognized !
Help !!!
Thank you
