Default Weird problem with Sony Vaio while typing..

Hello,

I'm had a sony vaio vx89 for about 1 1/2 years with no problems.. Just
recently it started doing wierd things while I am typing.. Sometimes
while in the middle of a paragraph it will jump up 2 line and insert
my typing into the middle of the paragraph I already typed. ( it
just did it now)

I figured I may be hitting and alt or ctrl key by accident but, I'm
99% sure that's not the case.. It happens about 90% of the time I type
a long message.. But never happened before this month..

It also happens in outlook as well as anything I type into forms on
the web or usenet.

Any ideas?

Sincerley,

Are you maybe brushing the touchpad by mistake? It happens to me sometimes
on my laptop, my finger will brush along the touch pad and the cursor would
move.

I had a similar problem from day one with a Dell Inspiron 3500 (circa 1999).
You're typing along just fine and it skips around to another line. Very
frustrating. I called Dell and they said it was a software problem (O/S) but
I always suspected it also had to do with the circuitry in the keyboard and
how it interacted with the cursor. I found I had much less of a problem if I
made sure the cursor was well away from the area where I was typing and
also making sure I was as smooth and deliberate as possible while typing.
When I later purchased a Latitude (used) I found that its keyboard, while
not doing the same thing as the Inspiron, would have a tendency to add two
letters while typing, as in, if I typed the word "additional" it would look
like "addditiional". Again, deliberate smooth typing is the key. I don't
know if all laptops are "keyboard challenged" but I suspect the older Dells
were.

Have you tried increasing the repeat delay setting? I am extremely fast =
at typing and my problem is that I'll lose characters because I tap the =
key but it didn't travel far enough to make contact. However, if you =
pause more than a quarter second, the typical default, then the key will =
start repeating.

Some BIOS'es don't even let you set the keyboard rate and delay because =
they figure the OS is going to override it anyway (they are too oriented =
towards Windows). Whatever you configure in the BIOS gets overriden by =
the settings, if any, in the operating system. In Windows, run the =
Keyboard applet in Control Panel. Make the repeat delay longer.

Go into Device Manager and look at the properties for your =
mouse/pointing device. See if upping the sampling rate will help =
eliminate the problem. You can also try upping the input buffer but I =
don't think it would help with your problem. This is just something to =
try to see if it helps. Touchpads are capacitive devices and maybe your =
hand or finger being near it makes it think there might've been a =
movement but a higher sampling rate lets its average more events so it =
knows that you really didn't want to move the cursor. Just a guess. If =
it doesn't help, just revert the sampling (and buffer) values back to =
whatever they were before.

Hi Jason,

I would recommend turning 'tapping' off. It is one of the first things I do when tweaking any new system. I have also found that
the touchpad last longer (trouble-free) with tapping turned off.

Ciao . . .
