Does the new video card work ok until you run an AVI?

Perfectly - it's a Geforce 7600GS.

Oddly, if I uninstall the drivers and reboot, then choose not to
install the card but use the generic Windows drivers, I can play video
files ok again.

As soon as I tell windows to install the card's drivers, Media player
locks up again when I try to play the same file. So it looks like an
incompatability with Nvidias drivers and the card - the manufacturer
doesn't provide card-specific drivers. Or a clash between the nvidia
driver and the codecs - but they were fine together with my previous
card (also a Geforce)

Annoying, but I'm not prepared to reinstall Windows to see if that
fixes it - I just use my laptop to watch videos on.

I wonder if some previous versions of the drivers would work?
