problems with my AMD 64 3200+ & Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard

Ok, so I got this combo on Friday and attempted to set it up. I first
tested it by putting the video card and RAM in the mobo and connecting the
monitor, power supply and power switch. I put the mobo on a piece of
cardboard outside the case and powered it up. Everything seemed to be fine.
Then I installed it in my case and hooked up everything and now I'm running
into a couple of problems. The first is, the computer now turns on as soon
as I plug the power cord into the power supply. At first I thought I had
the power switch connector in backwards or something so I switched it around
and tried it the other way, but the same thing happened. Then I just
completely unplugged all the front panel connectors but the computer still
turns on as soon as I plug the power cord in. Any ideas on why this might
be happening?

Also, once it attempts to post, it detects my IDE devices fine, then it
seems it tries to find whether I have RAID (I don't), then I get to a screen
where it says "Error loading OS". I set up my bios so that it boots from my
CD-RW first and put my Windows XP disc in (one I've used with success many
times before) but the same thing happens. Any ideas there? Any help would
be much appreciated. Trying to get this thing up and running before Doom
III comes out. Thanks!

That is odd, have you checked to make sure the motherboard isn't touching
any place it shouldn't? Tried taking it out and booting it out of the box,
does it still happen? If not hten I would guess that something in the case
is shorting the mobo for you.

stand-offs/risers to keep the mobo from touching the case, but I'm not sure
if all of them were exactly the same size. Is it possible that's the
problem?

I have seen all kind of wierd things with computers...if the head of the
screw is bigger than the metal "lip around the hole in the Mobo I have seen
those short them, also if the Mobo is "twisted" or has a significant amount
of pressure on the mounting screws, or more likely check to see that you
don't have a mounting stud someplace under the Mobo.

If they are significantly different size it could flex the board
making bad contacts or even crack some solder joints if the
height difference were severe enough. You might just have an
extra, unused standoff shorting back of board? Often a standoff
is incorrectly used in position (roughly) to the left of 2nd PCI
slot from top.. that position is used by mATX boards but not many
(most?) full ATX. Easiest way to check that is to count number
of standoffs showing on front of board and take right-side panel
off and see how many standoffs are installed, protruding though
motherboard tray.

Another possibility is if you have a wake-on-lan or modem device
plugged in... try disabling these settings in bios and/or
removing the PCI cards and AMR/CNR/etc risers if any are
installed... in other words, strip system down and disable
onboard features trying to isolate cause.

It's always possible the bios has an option to power on once power is
restored (though unusual for this to default to on).
I know my MSI board has this option, so if the power goes out or somethin,
it will come back on automatically.
