Default Hard drive not recognized

This is not really a hardware problem, but....

On a machine I built (AMD 2600, Segate SATA drive, Win2K) someone
added an IDE WD 160 Gig drive. It was formatted NTFS compressed.

There are 2 Windows installs (both 2K), dual boot. The drive shows up
in the normal install, but not in the second one.

In the second install, device manager lists the drive and says it is
working properly, but it does not show in explorer. Both installs
have been recently updated and are otherwise normal.

What might cause this?

Could the compressed drive be a problem? (but it works OK in 1
install) Does anyone have experience with uncompressing a drive?

Thanks in advance

Phil
