Default Noisy AMD fan on ASUS k8V-X

The fan on my retail AMD64 3000+ gets very noisy when CPU usage goes
over 50%. I have noticed that the fan speed then goes upto around
6000rpm. Is this fan supposed to be so noisy?

It speeds up when the CPU starts to get hot. I run a Seti (100% usage) so I
keep the side off the case for better cooling. Otherwise the fan sounds like
it ready to take off. With the side off I can't hear it.
