Default Dell SSD - ala carte vs upgrade

in looking at the M1330 -
there is a 128GB SSD option for the disk upgrade
from the 320GB normal hard drive.
The upgrade is about $350...

BUT - the drive is listed around $700 -
http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?...&x =0&y=0&p=2

SO - how can they offer it as a somewhat inexpensive upgrade ?

Loss leader or volume OEM pricing. Your guess is as good as mine.
Those would seem to be the only possibilities. With Dell not doing as
well financially as in the past, my guess is that they are avoiding loss
leaders.

that is not really the question. the question is who would pay dell $650 or
$999 for the 128gb ssd drive they list on their web site when you can buy
similar drives from other places for $250 to $300? i suspect the pricing is
more to make their laptop buyers feel like they are getting a bargain with a
new computer such as you seem to have believed before considering the
general market price for these things. for them to 'upgrade' a laptop to
the 128gb ssd for $350 means it actually costs the consumer more than jut
$350 as some value had been assigned to the traditional 320gb drive that was
in the configuration... and even at just $350 dell is making money on the
drive... add in the value for the 320gb drive removed from the configuration
and that just adds gravy.

or perhaps the $650 and $999 priced units are just old inventory when the
market price was that high for these units... and since nobody is buying
them they linger about their web site.
