My Trend Micro PC-Cillin is about to expire and renew automatically at
the end of
December. Is PC-Cillin considered a good anti-virus package right now or
has it been
surpassed? Anything better that updates reliably and is half way effective?

Thanks!

Avira (free) is pretty damn good, but it throws up a large popup on a
daily basis trying to push their full product.

It does very well in the http://www.av-comparatives.org tests, both
for current viruses, but also a retrospective test where they use old
virus signatures against new variants.

You can get it at http://www.free-av.com

On a day-to-day basis, I use Avast (i've never been a fan of AVG) as
it doesn't get quite as annoying telling me that keygens etc are
potentially infected :-}

A few months ago I did some research and I came up with Eset NOD32
Antivirus. I decided to switch to it and so far, no complaints. I
imagine depending on which sites you visit, you will get different
answers.

Use AVG 8.0 Free Edition and if you want some added peace of mind,
periodically visit the (free) online scanner at BitDefender (.com).

Most of the versions of Trend I have seen lately are suites - not unlike
McAfee/Norton. Not a fan.

AVG 8.0 is unfortunately now also a suite, providing anti-virus, spyware,
webshield (website pre-scan), and rootkit protection. My experience is that
AVG is still good and less cumbersome than many/most other options out
there.

Be sure to remove your current AV program before installing the replacement
app.

Good luck.

AVG has also had its' fair share of false positives lately, at least
one of which crippled the PC and stopped it booting IIRC (i'm talking
the last 3-4 weeks here)

If you keep Trendmicro don't renew the subscription. Just buy the latest
version from a place like Buycheapsoftare.com. They sell TM 2009 for $25 vs
$40 for renewal from TM directly. That gives you a 3-machine license as
well.

Amazing. I come home from 12 hours of work and find my Dell E510 hit by
the
Extra Antivir virus.

Two questions - how do I get rid of it? Is there a free program? And -
what button do I hit to load up the screen that lets me do a facotry
restore? F1 - F12? Which one? It's a Dell
E510.

Thanks.

If you're referring to that bogus virus/spyware thing, google for
smitrem and look at malwarebytes.

Between the two of them you should be able to clean it up.

The hotkeys for factory image restore are CTL+F11, but I wouldn't wipe the
system just to rid it of a couple of bugs.
