Default Defeating NVidia Application Detection?

I like to use WinDVD 2000 2.8 to play DVDs. For some reason, some of the
NVidia drivers insist on changing the display mode to 640x480x16Bit when I
load the program. I was wondering if anyone could point me to some
information about how I might change the executable or something so that
the the driver doesn't recognize the program when it's run.

Here's a slight update. I found that if I run WinDVD in NT4 compatibility
mode, the drivers will not swich the display mode. I'm assuming that
WinDVD uses DirectX3 whenever it thinks that it is running in NT4, so it
looks like the detection may be happening in the DirectX code.
