Leadtek GF4 without fans?

hi, i have a leadtek gf4 4400. one of those ones with the gigantic heatsinks on it. it's probably almost two years old now. the fan makes noise. in the past when that's happened, i cleaned the fans, and it was ok for another few months. but now it seems the cleaning aint good enough. i'm going to get some replacement fans or a slot fan or something, but in the meantime, is it safe to run it without those piddly little fans? i mean, it still has the heatsink. i'm not overclocking. and i will avoid playing any games if i have to. i just want to be able to boot into windows and run my apps because at the moment it makes too much noise to leave on. thanks. I have the Leadtek 4600 ultra, also with the large wrap-around heatsink. Why don't you mount a nice quiet 80mm fan to your card similar to I have done... and junk those 2 small noisy fans...very simple to do indeed. See the pics at the following link which shows you how to do it without even marking the original heatsink... AIS.. very simple indeed and well worth while. http://www.pbase.com/cameron You do lose the slot below the AGP but a small price to pay for silence/good cooling. HTH you. Regards John |

Regards John So how did you make the mount for the fan. Also what is that wire (a fan?) I see connected to a crocodile clip and attached to a hd screw? The mount is simple 2 short lengths of plastic extrusion from the local DIY shop which I epoxied at the correct spacing to a square piece of plastic so it slots into the sides of or the Leadtek heatsink. The fan mounting screws also go through the angled extrusion plastic to make it even more rigid. I used an old plastic lid in which I cut the fan hole, but I can see no reason why you could not mount the fan directly to the plastic extrusion directly as long as the width is correct so it just slides into the heatsink slots nicely. Something like this... ________ __|_ Fan __|__ |_ _| The wire that clamped to the side of the hard-drive is thermal sensor which used to control the flow of air to the hard-drives. I've since moved on from that case quite a while now as that case was quite a few years old... I do however still use the same video card with that same 80mm fan mod, it lets me overclock the card quite a bit while still keeping it cool and at the same time keeping the noise down. I left the pics on there... in case anybody else fancied doing something similar, it really is a very simple mod which is definately worth doing... The advantage of this simple mod is it does not alter the card in any way, just keep your 2 small fans somewhere safe in case you ever need use of the warranty. I dont like a noisy machine, but with stuff getting faster we have to tolerate some noise unforunately especially if ones running a fast cpu and video card etc. but the way to go is definately with larger slower fans to keep the noise down! All the best John |

The GeforceFX can run without the fan in 2D. I don't see why your LeadTek
GF4 cannot. You should experience artifacts or lockups before any damage is done. -- First of One, Primary Adjunctive Grid Alpha-01 Remove "NOT" from Email Address to Reply Mech Arena: http://daxin.netfirms.com/ FormulaSAE Racing: http://fsae.utoronto.ca "bl" wrote in message ... hi, i have a leadtek gf4 4400. one of those ones with the gigantic heatsinks on it. it's probably almost two years old now. the fan makes noise. in the past when that's happened, i cleaned the fans, and it was ok for another few months. but now it seems the cleaning aint good enough. i'm going to get some replacement fans or a slot fan or something, but in the meantime, is it safe to run it without those piddly little fans? i mean, it still has the heatsink. i'm not overclocking. and i will avoid playing any games if i have to. i just want to be able to boot into windows and run my apps because at the moment it makes too much noise to leave on. thanks. |

The FX has smartpower, it slows the workload of the GPU when in 2D, the GF4 series is not that smart... its simply runs full whack all the time so some form of cooling is required. The trick is sufficient cooling with no noise! John |
