Default Strange overheating problem

Hi,

I have an ASUS A7A266 motherboard with Athlon XP 2000+ processor and
thermaltake fan. Lately, the computer has developed a strange overheating
problem as follows:

When I turn the system on in the morning, all starts up okay, but the
temperature climbs (measured on Asus Probe) slowly up to unacceptable
levels. I have seen it run up to 72 C (before I ran out of nerve) and there
is a distinct heat smell about the machine so the temperature rise is real.
Okay, then I turn the computer off, even for just a couple of seconds, and
reboot. The temperature drops from boot, back down to what I consider
normal for this board, in the low 50's. It will run fine all day after that.

My suspicion is that the heatsink may not be seated properly, so I was
thinking of removing it and re-setting. Anyone have any other ideas?

Have you checked the cpu fan ? When a fan starts to screw up it may spin at
very low rpm untill it heats up. Youy can remove the fan, peel back the
sticker on the back of it and put a drop or 2 of 3 in 1 oil in it.

Have you checked to make sure your fan on the CPU is ALWAYS starting up OK?

Time to remove the CPU fan, remove the old thermal grease with 99% Isopropyl
alcohol, apply fresh good quality thermal grease, and reseat the fan.

Yes, just don't ever press down on the HSF. Press down only on the
catch. Ah, the voice of experience.
