I just bought some Sony CD-Rs at CompUSA for $10 for a 50-pk. They are
high speed (what ever THAT means) 1x-48x, 700mb, 80min on a spindle.
Says on the label that they are made in Taiwan. This is the info from
CDR Media Code Identifier v1.63:

ATIP: 97m 24s 16f
Disc Manufacturer: Sony Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

Are these discs any good or did I get a pile of junk plastic??
Thanks for any info.

Those look the same as the spool I got at Staples a couple of weeks ago for
$9.44.
They won't burn faster than 32x in my 52x Lite-On for some reason. (Yes, my
burner is fine with *other* 48x and 52x media, burning all but the Sony at
max rated speed). Other than that, they've been OK. I have about 5 left and
no coasters so far.

Predominately yellow label on the spindle, right? I've burned most of
a 100 count spindle, no coasters, but like Peter I'm not getting burn
speeds over 32x. Other than that they seem to be decent media.

Also sounds like a spindle I picked up after Labor Day at Wal-Mart (with
much Spanish text on the label) .

Best I could get was 32X too, and a check with CDSpeed showed they were
NASTY with errors.

OK for road CDs, but I didn't trust them with anything else.

Probably made by Acer, not the greatest stuff and definitely not good for
48x

I don't think Sony actually makes CD-Rs despite the ATIP manufacturer code,
I think a lot of them are made by Lead Data which is not exactly a highly
regarded manufacturer. I've heard more than their share of problems with
Sony CD-Rs overall..
