nVidia doing something nice for a change
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2766882563
Donating a monster PC to be auctioned for charity. a.. Special NVIDIA® GeForceT FX 5950 graphics processing unit running at 510MHz/1GHz core clock frequencies a.. Special, highly-overclockable AMD Athlon® 64 FX 51 processor a.. Four Hitachi 7K2 250GB hard drives for a total of one terabyte of storage capacity a.. Two Samsung SyncMasterT 211MP 21-inch, high-resolution LCD/TV monitors a.. Logitech® Z-680 Dolby® Digital 5.1 speaker system, Cordless MXT Duo keyboard and mouse and gaming controllers, including a 2.4 GHz cordless joystick, Cordless RumblePadT gamepad, and Momo® Racing Force Feedback Wheel Not a bad system, eh? -- There's nothing men won't do for love. There's nothing women won't do for money. |

Nvidia donating 0.00001% of their profits is hardly doing something nice;
the auction is an ad for Nvidia. For them, it's dirt cheap publicity, and it gives customers the misconception that they care about the 800 million people who don't have enough food. |

... Ah don't be such a cynic. nVidia, rich as they are, could hardly be called a company which makes other people poor (except maybe ex-3dfx employees). In terms of environmental damage, nVidia makes us all very poor. That will feed a lot of hungry people this Christmas, that's what matters. What matters is the end result, which is more harm than good. And as a result of this auction's intended publicity, nVidia will convince consumers to buy more stuff they don't need, adding to pollution levels, which we export to 3rd world countries. A single batch of chips requires about 27 pounds of chemicals, 9 pounds of hazardous waste, and 3787 gallons of water requiring extensive chemical treatment. Meanwhile, 1 billion people don't have access to clean drinking water, 12.2 million children under 5 years old die each year, most of them from causes which could be prevented for just a few cents per child, according to the World Health Organization. |

Would they send you the computer giftwrapped in a wrap saying "More then 600 children die every day of Starvation in ethiopia! Enjoy your Gift!" |

"J.Clarke" wrote in message d... And if nvidia shut their doors how would that help those people? It would help them immensely. 20 million tons of hazardous wastes are shipped to 3rd world countries annually, under the belief that the lives of people in third world countries are worth less, judged by "foregone earnings" from illness and death caused by pollution, according to the former chief economist of the World Bank. They make less money, so it's cheaper if they die from our pollution. Hint--charity only happens when there is disposable income, aka "profits". When only 0.00000001% of that income is going to charity, it does not justify buying more video cards under the false assumption that it will help 3rd world countries. The failure of entitlement to food and water is in many ways a consequence of the excessive consumption of 1st world countries. The land required for the consumption of the average American is 4 to 6 hectares, whereas if you divide the Earth's usable land by total population, you get 1.7 hectares per person. If it weren't for our excessive consumption, then there would be no need to expropriate millions of acres of land in 3rd world countries, so that indigenous people can no longer live off the land, and are instead forced to sell their labor at wages that are 1.5 times less than basic requirements of subsidence. |

It would certainly help to bring about awareness of the problem, but we have a tendency to want to distance ourselves from the horrible injustice and the harsh consequences of our excessive consumption. That's what Disney Land is all about. |

Good afternoon Chronic;
"The Chronic" wrote in message ... "Dark Avenger" wrote in message om... Would they send you the computer giftwrapped in a wrap saying "More then 600 children die every day of Starvation in ethiopia! Enjoy your Gift!" I do applaud those who take heart to look after those who are badly off. Simultaneously, I see a lot of abuses, too. Ethiopia has some of the best agricultural land in Africa. Ten years ago, that land was used for battlefields. What's the problem that they can't grow enough food today? Drought? Manpower? Morals? All of the above? It would certainly help to bring about awareness of the problem, but we have a tendency to want to distance ourselves from the horrible injustice and the harsh consequences of our excessive consumption. That's what Disney Land is all about. Five hours away from me is Canada's largest toxic waste site. Every day, poisons from a tar pond seep into an estuary and are carried out to sea. It's existence had nothing to do with consumption, just sleazy management. That is the same issue which affects many other countries who cannot or will not take responsibility for their lack of national foresight, but still want all the glory. Cheers, John |
