A7N8X - no POST
I have the following configuration:
MB: ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe (Rev 2.0 Bios C1006) CPU: AMD 2500+/333 (barton core) RAM: GEIL PC-3200 (400Mhz) 512MB (qty of 2 for a total of 1024MB) AGP: AOPEN GeForce 4 MX 440 8X 64MB CASE: Antec Server Tower SLK1600 HD: Maxtor 6Y080MO SATA 80GB OS: Windows 2000 Server I bought all of the above compenets from NewEgg.com in June, 2003. The system has run fine with zero flaws until today. After installing the latest Windows Media 9 service pack, I rebooted the machine. It never came back up. I have done the following: 1) Swapped the memory around...still no POST 2) Cleared CMOS...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" 3) Removed AGP video card...I get three beeps and an audible "System Failed Memory Test" 4) Took excat make/model of memory from an alternate machine (running ASUS P4P800-Deluxe) and installed into the A7N8X...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" 5) Took the "bad" memory and installed it into my alternate ASUS P4P800-Delux...no problems, the P4P800 boots fine 6) Unplugged all iEEE 1394 and USB cables from the motherboard...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" Could the CPU be bad? I cannot get to a POST screen to make any changes in the BIOS. Any help would be appreciated. Bryan |

I have done the following: 1) Swapped the memory around...still no POST 2) Cleared CMOS...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" Right, so it's memory related. 3) Removed AGP video card...I get three beeps and an audible "System Failed Memory Test" 4) Took excat make/model of memory from an alternate machine (running ASUS P4P800-Deluxe) and installed into the A7N8X...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" Right, so it's likely the memory configuration, or the slots. 5) Took the "bad" memory and installed it into my alternate ASUS P4P800-Delux...no problems, the P4P800 boots fine Right, so it's not likely that the actual DIMMs are dead. 6) Unplugged all iEEE 1394 and USB cables from the motherboard...I get the audible "System Failed Memory Test" Could the CPU be bad? I cannot get to a POST screen to make any changes in the BIOS. Any help would be appreciated. I would suspect that it's memory timings. Clearing CMOS should sort that. Try with just one DIMM, and try all three slots individually. Try it without any RAM as well, then with some. Ben -- I'm not just a number. To many, I'm known as a String... |

Thanks Ben (and Andrew).
I tried the suggestions to no avail. Additionally, I tried the following, also to no avail. 1) Removed CMOS battery, cleared CMOS via jumpers, removed all memory and removed motherboard from all power connections for 30 minutes (still receive "System Failed Memory Test") 2) Used PC 2700 DDR (as opposed to the 3200 DDR) from another system (still receive "System Failed Memory Test") 3) Removed CPU...received audible "System has no CPU" repeatedly 4) Installed an AMD XP 1800 with the PC 2700 memory (still receive "System Failed Memory Test") 5) tried one stick of PC 3200 (512MB) in each of the three slots, one at a time (still receive "System Failed Memory Test") If the memory timing is off in the BIOS, it appears there is no way to clear it so that I can get back into the BIOS. I've tried clearing the CMOS (with memory installed and with memory removed) but nothing seems to work. Perhaps the motherboard has gone belly up or the BIOS has corrupted. I have not upgraded the bios since August and the system had been running fine up until today. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated. In the meantime, I have asked ASUS for an RMA to get another board. Thanks again, Bryan Andrew Bowers wrote in message m... Bryan I've got the r1.04 A7N8X Deluxe and it wouldn't post for me yesterday afetr I flashed to the r1006 BIOS. I ended up unplugging the PC, making sure there was no residual power by waiting for the led on the board to go out; I popped the battery, reset the CMOS, put the battery back in and plugged in and booted. When I set everything back to as it was in the BIOS it wouldn't post. Ended up doing the above again and altered the memory timings from "AUTO" to "BY SPD" and it boots fine now... Seems for some reason the r1006 BIOS isn't happy running my XMS3200 slower than rated. Probably doesn't help, but worth a shot... Resolved! For anyone interested, here's what I did.
1) Removed AOPEN GeForce 4 MX 440 8X 64MB and replaced with ATI 7500. This at least allowed me to see the POST on screen...which continued to fail and prompted me for AWDFLASH.EXE (indicated BIOS was corrupt) 2) The latest version of AWDFLASH from ASUS did not work so I used the version on the CD that came with the motherboard (AWDFLASH version 8.23z). On a bootable floppy, copied AWDFLASH.EXE and the latest BIOS from ASUS (C18D1007.BIN for rev 2.0) 3) modified autoexec.bat to contain one line as follows: a:\awdflash.exe a:\C18D1007.BIN /py/sn/Wb/cd/cc/R 4) After system re-booted I cleared the CMOS via jumpers That's it. The system then booted fine with no problems. I was able to set the frequency to 200MHz dual-channel. However, once I put the original AOPEN video card back in, I started getting memory errors and blue screens. For now, I have set the memory freq back to 100MHz. I suspect I need a new video card. Thanks to all who responded. Bryan (bryan) wrote in message . com... Thanks Ben (and Andrew). I tried the suggestions to no avail.
