IE Quirkiness
My 2-year old GW 700X desktop with WinXP Pro is exhibiting
odd behavior with IE6. It doesn't download all the images on a page. Example: www.nissandriven.com, none of the images show (so it coule be a java problem?). I've reset the Privacy and Security tabs to Default. "Show Pictures" is checked under "Advanced", as is every other relevant option. Also, when I try to access pages that don't download completely, then Outlook Express won't send or receive mail. Rebooting doesn't help. Resetting to a restore point from a day or two ago gets everything working again...until I open IE. Then, even Netscape 4.8 (my browser of choice) can't open any pages either. When IE is acting up, some pages, like www.cnn.com, load images just fine. I'm running 5 computers on an SMC Barricade wireless router. The 700X connects to the router via a network cable. All of my other systems access the internet with no problem (using Charter 1.5 mbps broadband). IE has SP1 installed, as well as all of the critical updates since then. Does this sound like an IE problem or something else? Thanks much! Scott |

Scott, first thing to try before taking this to another level is to goto Control Panel and choose "Add/Remove Programs" and click on "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" and then choose the middle option (Repair Internet Explorer) and see if that fixes the problem. Lets try that first..... Regards, Thomas Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing. |

T.R.,
OK, under Add/Remove Programs, it shows "Windows XP Service Pack 1". When I click remove, a dialogue box comes up warning that "certain programs may not run properly..." Does the "Repair Internet Explorer" option come up after that? I don't want to actually remove SP1. Thanks! I totally ignored the fact that you are running XP and some XP setups don't list IE in their uninstall utility which means that the repair does have to be run manually like Fishface told you under (Advanced Users) on the url given. Sorry about that.... Also, you can get IE6 repair information at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...7/z02ie6rk.asp Regards, Thomas Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing. |

T.R.,
I checked the repair info you cited. None of it seemed to apply to my particular case. I tried the fix from the above post: "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerSetupSETUP.EXE" /g "C:WINDOWSIE Uninstall Log.Txt" ....but it said it couldn't find setupwbw.dll or the module. However, this fix is for Win95-2000...don't know if it applies. I do know that on some sites, IE6 displays a red Privacy button on the lower right. Clicking on it shows that site is "Blocked"....even though Privacy is set to allow all cookies, etc. Also, I did a Restore to a week ago, just before I installed 5 Microsoft updates: XP KB823182, Windows Update V4, XP KB826939, XP KB825119, XP KB828035...but no change. I'd sure like to try IE repair, if there were some way to bring up the option box. Also, is there a reason why Outlook Express won't download mail after IE hangs up on some pages? Thanks again! OK, I tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything wrong. Next, I tried to repair IE by right-clicking "install" on the file ie.inf. It's asking for some files on the WinXP SP1 CD. So I ordered the CD from Microsoft, and we'll see if that helps. If not, the next step will be to reinstall IE6 (after making the appropriate registry mod). I'd sure like to avoid reinstalling XP, as I assume that will wipe out all programs, and the last two years of tweaking will be lost. Looking at that web site you said the graphics don't show in: www.nissandriven.com I see that the top "interactive" image is a Macromedia Flash Interactive which needs the latest Macromedia Flash Player plugin to run along with JavaScript activated. The images below are just Plain Jane JPG files. As far as reinstalling XP..... Never have done an install of XP using the option to keep old programs and configurations so don't know if it actually does keep your old configurations and programs unmolested like doing an install of 98se using the option to keep current configurations and programs unmolested did. If this does finally boil down to having to go that far, I would just go on and do a complete fresh restoration so as to get a clean system to start out on. You do have a Restoration CD and OS CD for this computer don't you? Regards, Thomas Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing. |
