Default SDHC data cards in a Dell 9100

I have a Dell Dimension 9100, bought in August 2005, with a card
reader for CF, SD and other cards. It won't read High Capacity SD
cards, such as the 16 GB cards I am using in a camera. I am not sure
if this is hardware limitation, or whether it could be resolved with a
driver update. It isn't a big deal, as SDHC card readers are not
expensive, but I have a Toshiba laptop bought a couple of months
earlier, that will read these SDHC cards, so I am hoping there might
be a driver update for the Dell that will resolve this issue. Any
advice on this would be appreciated.

I don't think a driver will help. I have laptops that will read SDHC and
some that will not. The ones that will not, I use a card reader which I
have many since you can buy them on eBay from China for 1¢ (shipping
included).

There is a firmware update for the drive from this year:

http://tinyurl.com/6ej7b2

Says it is to support additional memory card formats. Worth a try.
Otherwise, a new internal drive is probably under $20.

The cable and connector for the Dell internal memory card reader are
proprietary 9-pin, not exactly your usual 9-pin internal USB, but
smaller. A one-for-one swap with more of a commodity drive may prove
problematic.

My suggestion is a simple USB adapter or reader. Insert the high
capacity SD card in the adapter, and plug the adapter into a front USB
slot. Simple and very inexpensive. These sorts of adapters cost
pennies from various Pacific Rim sellers on eBay.

I have an older SCSI flash card reader in my system, and it hits the
wall on large capacity SD, which I use in my camera... Ben Myers

There you go Tom.

http://www.ebay.com

Then search all categories for the following:

SD card reader

And set it for free shipping and set 2¢ for the high limit. Then you
will see dozens of them for sale for 1¢ and free shipping. And if you
bid 1¢, you may win hopefully like one out of eight bids.

I was told the postage was government sponsored. So they don't have to
pay for that. And if they are bought on the black market, maybe they get
10 for a penny. Or perhaps factory workers are slipping them into their
pockets. Otherwise I have no idea.

For sure, the Chinese government subsidizes postage there. Some of the
odd widgets I've bought on eBay had pretty low shipping costs and
acceptable delivery times. And they even work.

It's true about the penny SD card readers, but with a large grain of
salt. An eBay search for "CD card reader" followed by a sort on lowest
(price + shipping) gives a whole gaggle of penny (CURRENT BID!) readers
with free shipping. Now if one looks at COMPLETED BIDS(!!!!), the real
prices emerge, anywhere from $0.06 to even $0.21. Pretty affordable, no
matter what. Some of the eBay sellers claim to be in the US, not too
far from me in technology hotbeds like Lynn, MA and Malden, MA... Ben Myers
