Default Question About Motherboard - CPU Combination - Please

I need to know of a specific combination of a motherboard that WILL NOT
support 64-bit mode (AMD64/Intel EM64T ) but will work with a 64-bit CPU
(AMD64/Intel EM64T capable).

In other words a motherboard model that will take, say an Athlon x64 or
Intel Core 2 Duo, where the 64-bit capability will be wasted, but will run
well in 32-bit mode.

Many thanks.

That's not how it works. Just load a 32bit OS if you don't want to run in
64bit mode.

Thank you for your reply. What I actually meant is when "the disability"
to run 64-bi is not at the OS level only but also at the motherboard level.
That is a chipset that will not support the 64-bit capability of a 64-bit
CPU but will run well with it in 32-bit mode. And if so what actual
motherboard model and CPU could be and example of such setup. Thank you.

Everything having to do with the operational mode of the CPU is inside the
CPU. The chipset has nothing to do with it other than providing access to
peripheral devices. So you can't disable the cpu's ability to run in 64
bit mode via a chipset. All we're talking about here is the instruction
set the cpu uses. That's in the cpu, not in the MB, not in the chipset.

But doesn't the motherboard has to offer 64-bit wide buses in order to work
with a 64-bit CPU?

See this:

"With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based
on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended
virtual and physical memory. Intel EM64T provides flexibility for 32-bit now
and future software that supports 64-bit computing."

http://www.intel.com/technology/64bi...ions/index.htm

The part "64-bit supporting hardware" surely refers to the motherboard. It
implies that the 64-bit CPU will work like a 32-bit CPU when such hardware
support is missing, and as a 64-bit CPU when it is present.

Depends on how they define 64 bit, but all the buses are at least 64bit
wide on all Intel and and AMD 64bit cpu's. Some of them are 128bits wide.

It doesn't say that. If you can't understand it there's no need for me to
keep telling you that what you are looking for doesn't and will never
exist.

It doesn't say it, but that is what it means.

Please tell me what the sentence "With appropriate 64-bit ***supporting***
hardware" refers to? It obviously doesn't refer to the CPU, it refers to
some other hardware the CPU need in order to operate in 64-bit, that much is
clear. What hardware do you think that is?

It doesn't say it, but that is what it means.

That may be your interpretation of what it means, but it isn't what it
means. And if you read the whole paragraph that becomes clear.

Please tell me what the sentence "With appropriate 64-bit
***supporting*** hardware" refers to?

What it says is this;

With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based
on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended
virtual and physical memory. Intel EM64T provides flexibility for 32-bit
now and future software that supports 64-bit computing.

The 64 bit hardware is the MB designed for that CPU. The software is the
OS. It can be 64 bit or 32 bit or even 16 bit. Yes, you can run old msdos
on it. Do you get it yet? The software you run determines if it's 32 bit,
64 bit, or even 16 bit. This isn't the old days where the cpu bit size was
determined by the data bus, or the later days where they started using the
register size to define the bit width. This is today, and with marketing
practices they way they are today calling a 200MHz bus 400Mhz and even
800MHz in Intels case, what do you expect. But you can forget about the MB
doing anything bit wise except interfacing to the CPU. The os(really the
particular application) determines what mode you run in. yes it's possible
to run a 32bit app under a 64bit OS. It's done in Linux all the time. I
couldn't say for windows since I don't run windows.

It obviously doesn't refer to the CPU, it refers to some other hardware
the CPU need in order to operate in 64-bit, that much is clear. What
hardware do you think that is?

Indeed. More specifically the chipset, as you can see in this Intel page,
which details which chipsets support 64-bit mode.

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/rese...eng/203142.htm

That much being clear, my question, if you are still with me, concerned a
motherboard WITHOUT any of the chipsets that supports 64-bits, like the 845,
but with a 64-bit CPU. And if anyone knew the name of specific models
operating that way.

Thank you for your time.
