Default Nvidia error on Linux

I have an Nvidia card on my Linux desktop. During boot-up, when the
start-up scripts run nvidia-config-display, they get an error message (see
below). Does anyone know how this can be fixed?

Default Nvidia error on Linux

My first suggestion would be to make sure your system is updated.
Python in particular has had some changes recently IIRC and glibc
likewise. Keeping everything lined up on the same sheet of music
makes all work much better.

Beyond that, you would need to specify the nature of your system,
the version of Linux in use, the kernel, and the software
mentioned in the error messages of concern. And hope someone who
is familiar with such things notices it.

"Nvidia error on Linux" does not exactly draw attention to the
specific problem you need addressed.

You might also try booting to run level 3 (terminal mode) rather
than to X-windows. On my system, this is controlled by a line
in /etc/inittab

id:3:initdefault:

Change the 3 to a 5 to boot into a GUI.

Cheers!

Information about my system is below. I'm using an Nvidia 7300. It's
becoming more evident that this is a Python problem (specifically the
ixf86configmodule.so module). I upgraded to Python 2.6.2 but that did not
fix the problem. Upgrading to Python 3.0 is not an option because it is
incompatible with Python 2.0.

prompt uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.i686.PAE #1 SMP Sat Aug 15 01:07:59

I have a 7300 card on a 64-bit system, and have never seen the
problem, but that does not mean much given the different
distributions, kernels, etc. Python 3.0 is not yet packaged
for the flavor of Linux I use.

Linux hostname 2.6.31-tmb-desktop-0.rc7.1mdv #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat
Aug 22 11:51:20 EDT 2009 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core
Processor 5000+ GNU/Linux

If using the nvidia drivers, change to the nv drivers integral
to X-windows in recent times. If using the nv drivers, try the
nvidia drivers, either from your Linux distribution sources or
using the installer available on the nVidia website. Make the
change in xorg.conf and see what happens.

Cheers!

I figured it out. There's a bug in one of the python modules. To avoid
this bug, remove any reference to "InputDevice" in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file.

The original xorg.conf file:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

# generated from data in "/etc/sysconfig/keyboard"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

# generated from default
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Modes "nvidia-auto-select"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

The new, modified xorg.conf file:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Modes "nvidia-auto-select"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

After this change, everything will work fine.

Thank you!!!.

I've been setting up a new system with a card shown by lspci as
nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)

Running Mandriva linux 2009.1, I tried all of the nvidia kernel
options from the Mandriva repositories, as well as the various
options from the nvidia website, but had problems with video
corruption, and/or lockups/crashes.

Currently using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.25-pkg1.run, commenting out
the InputDevice lines for the keyboard and mouse in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
fixes the problems.

This is the first system I've setup that uses a nvidia card. I
subscribed to this newsgroup yesterday, and after reading your
article, decided to give it a try (I'd expected to have to stick
with the vesa driver for now), and to my surprise, it worked.

Thanks again.

Regards, Dave Hodgins

Try the driver for nVidia Geforce 6100 and later. This seem to work
for me when I put 9400 card in. I alway check XFdrake after boot up.
